A noisy week for parenting studies

January 18th, 2012 Comments off

First of all this week, there was a big (about 5,000 observations) sophisticated (University of Chicago Business School) study of bad behavior in little boys. Conclusion: little boys benefit substantially from living with both their biological parents. The second study was a little (78 observations) simplistic (unrepresentative sample, ideologically motivated researchers) of the Quality of Life of the children of lesbian couples. Conclusion: the children of lesbian couples are just as happy and well-adjusted as their peers.  Read more…

People who promote same-sex marriage say the Catholic Church’s stand that marriage is a sacrament that must be between one man and one woman is gay-bashing. Why, they ask, should it matter to you if two people of the same sex get married? Love is love, right? Read more…

Pro-Family Speaker Challenges Students

February 18th, 2011 25 comments

STEUBENVILLE, OH—”Marriage will be what this generation makes of it,” said Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, founder and president of the Ruth Institute. “My generation had its turn. It’s time for the millennials to step up to the plate.”

Morse answered the question “Same-Sex Marriage: Why Not?” before a packed house Wednesday, February 2, as part of Franciscan University’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

“Marriage in every society is the preferred place for sex and childbearing. Childbearing and sex are somehow related,” said Morse, author of Love and Economics: It Takes a Family to Raise a Village. “The sexual revolution took these three things—marriage, sex, and childbearing—apart.” Read more…

PROVIDENCE — The same-sex marriage debate played out at high volume at the State House on Wednesday, with advocates waving “vote for love” signs, and opponents arguing that nothing less than the soul of Rhode Island, the well-being of its children and the “sanctity of marriage” are at stake in a year when the state’s new governor and openly gay House speaker are enthusiastically backing gay nuptials. SAN MARCOS, CA, January 4, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Ruth Institute, a project of the National Organization for Marriage Education Fund, has announced its first annual Reel Love Challenge, a video contest for young adults, aged 18-30. Video Contest Focuses on Sustaining Marriage

January 7th, 2011 Comments off

by Jennifer LeClaire

There’s plenty of talk about the attack on marriages and family. Now, the Ruth Institute, a project of the National Organization for Marriage Education Fund, is encouraging creative young adults to become part of the solution with a video contest.

The Ruth Institute just launched its first annual Reel Love Challenge, a video contest for young adults aged 18 to 30. The contest is open to all young adults, married or single, male or female, in college, out of college, or never been anywhere near a college. This contest offers a platform for a generation to offer ideas about what sustains love over a lifetime.

“Marriage will be what your generation makes it,” says Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, founder and president of The Ruth Institute. “Divorce, adultery, even incest are all over the news. I urge all emerging adults to take matters into their own hands and begin to create a culture of fidelity and love.”

Roback says the Reel Love Challenge gives young adults a forum to start asking and answering, the right questions, such as “What makes lifelong love possible?” and “Why is it worth the effort?” She says the videos can be professional looking, or just done with a cell phone camera. The Ruth Institute is more interested in content, thoughts, and ideas, than Hollywood production quality.

Here’s the skinny on entering the contest: Read more…

What is going on with Prop 8?

November 30th, 2010 77 comments

by Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

I hear this question all the time when I travel. I heard it this fall in Michigan and New Jersey and North Carolina.   The Prop 8 case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, will be in court again on December 6th. I will be live-blogging from the courtroom.  I expect the posts will be at www.prop8case.com and at www.ruthblog.org. This case is extremely important, no matter where you live.  Perry v. Schwarzenegger is a federal case. The court is being asked to rule on the question of whether the requirement that marriage consist of one man and one woman violates the U.S. Constitution. If the courts find that there is a federal right to same sex marriage, there will be same sex marriage all over the country, immediately.  End of story. You care about this case. Read more…

News Coverage in NH

July 17th, 2010 Comments off

the news coverage of the NOM rally in NH got my quote right, but got my name wrong. Oh well. I could have easily straightened him out, if he had asked.

Dr. Ruth Roback, who heads the NOM-financed Ruth Institute, challenged the view that same-sex marriage does not degrade the lives of heterosexual couples.

Once same-sex marriage is made legal, Roback claimed state governments through education, social policies and other means try to force different social mores on the public.

“Marriage is a natural, pre-political institution; same-sex marriage is entirely a creation of the state,” Roback said. “Same-sex marriage is a hostile takeover of civil society by the state.”

Trip to NYC: surprises!

February 10th, 2010 Comments off

My trip to NYC has been very successful, which I will tell about in a future post. However, for now, I have to tell you this: I’m stuck in the blizzard!  I was supposed to leave early this morning, fly to St. Louis for an EWTN taping, and then fly home. Instead, I will be lucky to get out of NYC by Friday, and home by Saturday!

Speaking at Stanford tomorrow

February 1st, 2010 5 comments

On February 2, 2010, I will be at Stanford, debating the topic, “Is Christianity Compatible with Capitalism? Altruism v. Egoism.”  My debate opponent will be Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute.  The debate is jointly sponsored by the Objectivists of Stanford and the Catholic Community at Stanford. The debate will begin at 7:30, and will be held in Building 320, Room 105.

I hope to see you there!
