A legal victory for conscience

A pro-family group in the state of Washington hopes the rest of the nation is taking note of Wednesday’s ruling by a federal judge that pharmacists can’t be forced to dispense contraceptives that violate their religious beliefs.

U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton ruled Wednesday that Washington state cannot force pharmacies to sell Plan B or other emergency contraceptives. Leighton said the state’s true goal was to suppress religious objections by druggists — not to promote timely access to the medicines for people who need them. An Olympia drug store and two licensed pharmacists sued in 2007, saying that dispensing Plan B would infringe on their religious beliefs.
