Baby Boomer Regrets

March 22nd, 2011

USA Today has a story about Baby Boomers and their regrets. most of them are about money: (we didn’t  save enough) or about health (I should have used more sunscreen and exercised more.)

As a BB’er myself (born in 1953), let me add something to the discussion: I regret that I spent so many years of my married life contracepting. My husband agrees, BTW, and he’s not Catholic.

We wish we had started trying to have kids sooner, and that we had had the chance to have more kids.

Young people: what do you think you will regret in your fifties?

Never mind the sunscreen.

I was born the same year as you and I have the same regret. When my husband and I contracepted before marriage we didn’t realize what we were doing. We thought it was something that didn’t really matter. We thought no one who cared would ever know about it. It was easy. Most of our marriage was really really hard. I think there’s a relationship between the two.

Now I see that it’s like that game, Jenga. We pulled out a little brick and the tower was a little less strong. What we didn’t realize was that our children, seeing a poor example of a marriage, understanding that children are a “choice,” a type of acquisition really… they soaked up a culture where easy and ok are synonymous. They are pulling out a much larger brick and now it appears that the whole structure is about to topple.
