This is cool that these states are working toward making abortion illegal and aim to create a real threat to Roe v. Wade. Let’s just hope and pray it works.

Signatures are being submitted as Mississippi voters seek the opportunity to decide on a Personhood amendment, and Colorado residents may once again have the chance to determine when a person is legally a person.

The Mississippi petition drive needed a little over 89,000 valid signatures to put the issue on the ballot, and Les Riley, head of the Personhood Mississippi campaign, reports that results in that area have surpassed requirements.

“I don’t have final totals yet, but we’re going to [have] well over 120,000 total signatures,” he says. “We’ve got probably 105,000 now certified.”

The petition’s overwhelming success could mean voters could make a decision in 2011.

“We’ve got a couple of legal hurdles to get over, but [we're] very confident that our friends at Liberty Counsel will be able to help us there and that Mississippians will vote next year to make abortion illegal in our state, to give equal rights to all human beings and to set up a challenge to Roe vs. Wade,” the campaign head explains.

Riley contends that Mississippi is a pro-life state, and he expects support for passage to come from a full spectrum of people, regardless of their political orientation.

Similar to the Mississippi effort, Personhood Colorado has submitted nearly 80,000 signatures to gain a place on a future ballot for a constitutional amendment that would define the life of a human being as beginning at the start of the biological development.
