More American colleges are introducing mixed rooming, with Emerson College in Boston the latest to announce its embrace of what is known as “gender-neutral” housing. When Arlyn Katen ’12, an LGBT peer educator, read about gender-neutral housing in the Princeton Progressive Nation last year, “It just seemed like a very far-off decision,” she said, noting that she was “very surprised” when the University announced last week it would pilot a gender-neutral housing program next year. “I’m really happy about the decision,” she added.
