ACLU lawsuit challenges Bible Belt traditions

March 17th, 2010

I wonder if ACLU members have lawsuit quotas. Maybe they each have a bar graph on a white board to keep track of their filings. Perhaps the winner at the end of each month gets a plaque, the good parking spot, and an ice cream sunday.

Allie Martin and Jody Brown – OneNewsNow -

An attorney says a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) against a North Mississippi school district is an attempt to try and keep officials there from recognizing traditional morality.

Earlier this week, administrators at the Itawamba Agricultural High School opted to cancel its upcoming prom. That action was taken after 18-year-old Constance McMillen, a senior at the school, was told she could not arrive at the prom with her girlfriend, a sophomore at the school. Officials also informed McMillen she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo to the event.

The ACLU told school officials that McMillen’s rights were violated because same-sex dates were banned, and when administrators cancelled the prom, the ACLU filed its lawsuit. That legal group argues that cancellation of the event violates McMillen’s right to freedom of expression — and is an attempt by school officials to turn the young lesbian into “the villian who called the whole thing off.”

Steve Crampton, vice president of legal affairs at Liberty Counsel, says the ACLU’s lawsuit is an extreme move.

This whole situation is sad. Sad that someone cares about not allowing a girl to wear a tuxedo, sad that the whole problem was caused because she asked permission, and sad that the response was to cancel prom.

Only one question interests me. Who called the ACLU?

I am a teacher. For the sake of the whole community there must be some community standards. If students refuse to follow the dress code or community standards of civlity in so far as behavior and speech goes then there must be consequences. The purpose of schools is not to allow an all out Caligulan orgy. The purpose of school is to educate youth and to train them in basic civility. In a school there is a social contract and that social contract includes following prescribed rules for the common good. Students may not, for example, talk or pass notes during an examination. Students may only leave class with permssion of the teacher and some schools prohibit bathroom breaks Discipline is stricker for AP or major state exit exams. One of the purposes of group discipline, in the family, in our houses of God, in school, in the military and in society generally is to help young people to pass through difficult transition years from late childhood through adolecscence and early adulthood.. Young people must be supported and guided through these years so that they can pass through this difficult time without too much harm or distrubance. As I often tell my students we may think for the moment that anything goes and live today because tomorrow we die but in reality -unless you are snuffed out by drugs or an auto accident-you usually do not die from foolish mistakes in youth. You suffer. You suffer for years and you experience unhappiness, misery, disappointments and remorse.

The ACLU is an evil parasitic organization which does much harm to families and to societies not to mention often dishonors the memory of brave warriors who made the supreme sacrifice for their country -as in the case of the Mojave Cross. God save us from such fanatical devils. They are, gradually, turning the state and even schools into amoral enemy institutions.
