Children best served by mom’s lesbian relationship?

It appears as though a lesbian mom’s partner takes precedent to the childrens’ father. Poor kids, especially, I should think, any boys in the family. I’m sure they’re thrilled by the new arrangement: lose your dad and get a second “mom.”

An official with the Illinois Family Institute (IFI) says it’s outrageous that a judge has permitted a mother to take her children from their dad in order to move in with her lesbian partner.

Recently Karen Kelsky, the ex-wife of Taro Iwata, took him to court in a custody battle. Kelsky has become a lesbian and was granted custody of the couple’s two children, and will also be allowed to move to Eugene, Oregon — 1,800 miles away from her ex-husband — to live with her lesbian partner.

Laurie Higgins with the IFI says the decision is tragic. “It not only doesn’t take into account the needs of the children, I don’t think it takes into account their right to be deeply and regularly involved with their father,” she states. “And that has to be of more importance to their relationship with a lesbian partner of their mother.”

Iwata’s Illinois-based attorney, Jason Craddock, has written of the case, describing it as a case of judicial activism.

”[Judge John R. Kennedy] went where our legislature expressly declined to go,” writes Craddock. “The Illinois House voted down a civil unions bill last year….Yet Judge Kennedy took it upon himself to legally treat a lesbian couple…the same way the Illinois courts have treated hetero married couples….”

Craddock says his client plans to appeal.
